13EL/EU127 - Story, log, proofs & pictures!
Stories

Story
Hi IOTA-hunters,

this is the story of 13EL/EU-127 which was active from 15th till 17th May 2004.

The idea of activating EU-127 and Germany's only offshore islands was born last summer when I have been on a bike-tour from Dortmund to Norderney Island. I asked a couple of IOTA-hunters if Helgoland Island (N-14) would have been activated before. Everybody told me that it would be a *new one* on 11 so why not going to Helgoland Island?

At first Lars, 13EL840 and I intended to rent a flat on Helgoland's upperland or to be active as a portable station for some hours only. After having studied some tourist information we decided to go to Helgoland's beach island called the 'Dne' (N-15) which is also a 'most wanted'.

On Saturday, 15th May we started by car and went to Wilhelmshaven to go onto the ship 'MS Wilhelmshaven' (http://www.wilhelmshaven-helgoland.de).

It took us to Helgoland Island within 3 hours. The sea was rough and I have become a little bit seasick. On Helgoland we went to another small port and got onto the tiny ferry 'Witte Kliff' which is connecting Helgoland and Dne Island. At 1230 UTC we started the activation.

The propagation was not very stable but we had some good openings to France, Spain, Italy and Poland. Within 44 hours we worked 222 stations and 26 DXCC. That is not too bad but we expected to gain a better result.

This was the equipment we used:

  • TRX: Kenwood TS50S
  • Power supply: Diamond GZV4000
  • Headset: Heil BM-10-4
  • Antenna: Antron 99
  • Mast: Aluminium, 7 meters
  • Notebook: Sony GRX316G
As the propagation was very poor on Sunday midday we went on a sightseeing-tour to explore Helgoland Island. The weather was fantastic so we took about 950 photos. At this time there has been a good opening to Germany and central Europe. As we have not been on the air we are sorry for that, bad luck!

You will find some good information about Helgoland Island here:
http://www.helgoland.de
http://www.helgoland.cuxiland.de

See you soon, maybe on a second trip to Dne Island? You never know ...

212EL - Story, log, proofs & pictures!
Stories

Story
Hello DX-friends,

this is the story of 212EL/0.

Lars, 13EL840 and I got ready in the morning of Friday, the 13th of February 2004.

We packed the VW Passat TDI with our equipment and started our trip to Scandinavia via Hamburg, Fehmarn Island, Copenhagen and Stockholm. The police stopped us two times! The first stop was near the Danish border when police- and customs officers checked the car. The second break was caused by two Swedish police-officers. They wanted to check our papers somewhere between Stockholm and Grisslehamn in the early morning. Maybe we looked like gangsters in a stolen car??? :-)

On Saturday, the 14th we took the ferry at 10:00 AM after we tried to sleep in the car for a couple of hours. You will find the ferry-company Ecker Linjen here: http://www.eckerolinjen.fi/.

Two hours later we arrived on Ecker Island, got to our rented house and built up the antenna. Unfortunately we had some problems with wet coax cable and bad SWR. So we started the first walk to explore the island and take some photos.

The first small pile-up started Sunday, the 15th. During the week we worked 504 stations and 51 DXCC. There were very few openings to central Europe. We listened Spain and South America every day and also worked some nice DXCC from Africa. Backscatter contacts have been quite difficult as we had a vertical antenna only.

This was the equipment we used:

  • TRX: Kenwood TS50
  • Power supply: Diamond GZV4000
  • Amplifier: KLV1000
  • Headset: Heil BM-10-4
  • Antenna: Antron 99
  • Mast: 12 meter aluminium
  • Notebook: Sony GRX316G

Hope you like our few photos of the sailing ship Pommern and the castle Kastelholm. More info about Ecker and the Aland Islands you will find here:

See you on our next DX'Pedition!

144EL - Story, log, proofs & pictures!
Stories

Story
Hi dear friends,

this is a short report about our Magic Island Pedition 144EL.

I started on 25.01.2003 by the new ICE-shuttle from Cologne to Frankfurt. At Frankfurt Airport we got into an Airbus A340 by LAN CHILE. This jet went via Madrid to Santiago de Chile. It took about 15 hours!!! In Santiago I had some spare time and my dear friend Raphael, 32SD103 guided me. He did a fantastic job!! Thank you very much Raphael for the wondeful hours in Santiago de Chile.

In the evening of 26.01. I went from Santiago Airport to the Easter Island. The jet was a Boing B767 of LAN CHILE which took about 5 hours. At Mataveri Airport my amigo Luis, 144SD101 was waiting for me. We went to Tahai and had a nice evening. On 27.01. I started the DX-Expedition which was my first purpose to go to Rapa Nui.

I worked 1412 stations and 82 countries. The equipment used was a Kenwood TS50, a Heil-Headset BM-10-4 and a 4-Element-Yagi. All the time we used 100 watts.

In several afternoons I did some nice sightseeing. As you know Rapa Nui is the most magic and the most lonely island of the world. The MOAIS (the famous stone sculptures) and the AHUS (the platforms) are very interesting. Also I like the Rapa Nui women. They are really gorgeous! Luis' wife Ana, his daughters Susanna & Gorgette and his son Jos-Luis are very kind people. Several times I borrowed a jeep and explored the island. It was big fun to drive on this dusty roads!!!

The weather has been fantastic. Most of the time the temperature was around 25C. There have been some showers but that is quite normal for this part of the Pacific Ocean. The first day we had strong winds which broke some of the overhead powerlines. This day I lost valuable time and also the power-supply of my notebook!! As there is no Sony shop on this small island, I did not have a chance to use the notebook any longer. After the second breakdown we organized a car-battery and a paper-log in order to go on with the activation.

On 06.02.2003 at 11:50 o'clock Rapa Nui time (UTC - 5 hours) I had to leave this paradise. We travelled back into the winter of Germany and did not feel well as the journey took 28 hours!!! In the evening of the following day i finally arrived at my home and suffered from jetlag.

Hope you like my photos! Have fun & good DX!!!

Iorana,
Max, (ex)144EL
